Summertime Snook
Report Date: July 12, 2012
It’s been a while since my last fishing report. We are now in mid July and boy is it hot! Business generally tends to slow down this time of year so I have a chance to get caught up on boat work, tackle, and spending time with my family.
I was able to do a few trips in June but not as many as I anticipated.
Starting with the inshore. The bait schools have moved in on the beach ,and with them are many predators on their tails. Following these bait schools early in the morning are big herds of tarpon, snook, jack crevelle, and blue fish just to name a few. Fishing the jetties at night has also produced some nice tarpon and lots of snook up to 25lbs. July and August are when the snook come in to spawn. We’ve had some nights up to 15 fish this summer.
The offshore fishing has been consistent ,also. Fishing the edge has produced lots of bonitas with some big kingfish up to 30lbs and your occasional wahoo mixed in.We have been catching most of our fish between 150-300ft of water. The dolphin fishing has been slow this year but we did manage to capture some nice ones with Greg Hawkins and friends up to 35lbs. Swordfishing has still been good in the day and at night.
With the calm seas, summer is the best time to target these gladiators of the sea.
Typically this time of year we fish the reef for a couple hours until it gets too hot. After that we run offshore in hopes of finding a school of mahi mahi or will try for a sword depending on what the customer wants to do. The next few months will be a good time to run across to the Bahamas. There we can target yellowfin tuna, marlin, dolphin, snapper, grouper, and many other species. Give me a call and let’s take advantage of the calm waters the summer has to offer and catch some fish!
