Summer Fun!

The first couple weeks of August started off with trips to Bimini, Bahamas. Bimini is only 48 miles southeast of Miami. On a calm day you can get there in one hour and thirty minutes. The island has grown tremendously since I was a child. Now they have a 300 room Hilton and a casino on the north end along with hundreds of condos and single family houses. This makes for a nice resort/vacation place if you want to do a quick retreat.

After we cleared customs and ate breakfast, our clients wanted to deep drop for the afternoon. Deep dropping is composed of a 6 hook rig and a big sinker at the bottom. We generally fish with electric reels anywhere from 600-1500 ft. of water. After hitting a few spots we captured queen, green, silky, and yellow eye snapper which were plenty of fish for dinner.

The next day we ran up to the ginger bread grounds and anchored up for a couple hours. I had some young children on the boat and new it would be great action for them. With in a few minutes of soaking our lines it was game on. The kids caught barracudas, amberjacks, triggerfish, hound fish, sharks, and yellow tail snappers. They pumped and reeled until their arms fell off. The little ones had smiles from ear to ear the whole ride back. Priceless!!

  When I got back to Miami I did several more reef trips. Live baiting and trolling the reef have still been holding plenty of action. Lots of bonitos, kingfish, tunas, sailfish, and wahoo have been the norm.

  I just got a report from my brother who operates the L and H in Key Biscayne, Fl. that the Mahi Mahi have shown up. He caught his limit of 40 gaffers yesterday. This has been the first descent catch I’ve heard of this year. I anticipate that they will stay strong until winter time. So if you like catching and eating mahi now would be a great time to go. Asides from the mahi there have been some good swordfish reports offshore as well.
