Good Spring Fishing

Report Date: June 1, 2014

As I mentioned in my last fishing report, May is black fin tuna month. Shortly after the bonita’s appeared in full force, the big black fin tunas were right behind them. Over the past two weeks we have been catching 2-6 tunas per trip. The average fish weighing 25lbs - 33lbs.

Deep sea fishing later in the day seems to be the ticket this time of year. We leave the dock at 4pm and fish until it gets dark. This gives the water a chance to cool down. Normally there is a south east breeze in the afternoon which enables us to put the kites up with live bait’s dangling on the surface. Kite fishing is the best way to target black fin tuna do to the presentation of the baits. There is no excess line or terminal tackle in the water which improves your hook up ratio. Black fin tuna have magnificent eye sight and can notice anything that does not look natural to them.

Aside from the black fin tuna we have been averaging 2-3 sailfish per day. The sailfish have been free jumping late in the day. One day we spotted 12 sailfish breaching in about an hour’s time. There have also been some big kingfish in the mix. The biggest kingfish landed on the Frick and Frack was 51lbs this month.

If you like shark fishing we can target those as well. A good share of our tunas this spring have been eaten by these apex predators. Other shark’s we have been catching are golden hammerheads, sandbar sharks, black tip shark, and the occasional mako shark.

Over the next few months, when the reef fishing slows down, we will start to travel further offshore into the deep blue sea. In the deep blue there will be big schools of dolphin which congregate under debris, sea weed, and birds.

We will also do a lot of swordfish trips in the summer. These gladiators of the sea can grow up to be 1000lbs or greater. We target them in the day and at night. They put up a hard battle and are great table fare.

June and July are the peak month’s for snook fishing in the inlet’s and Biscayne bay. June is when the big females come into the mouths of the inlets to lay egg’s. Light tackle snook fishing can provide great action for beginners and experts alike. It is not uncommon to catch 15 or 20 big snook in a single night.

I still have some date’s available this summer, so if you would like to spend some quality time in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean with her calm summer time seas now is the time.

Congratulations to my brother and his family aboard team Frick and Frack. They placed first in the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo and James David Jr. was awarded top male angler.
