Rain Rain Go Away

Report Date: November 7, 2011

This October has been the windiest and rainiest I can remember in a long time. I started out the month fishing with Mike Bray, Mike Jr., Sam Fox, and their friend Julian. It was a four day trip booked to the Bahamas, but due to the bad weather we had to fish locally.

The first day we fished it was blowing 25mph with gusts up to 35mph.On the way out , we noticed acre sized schools of mullet pouring through the inlet and getting chased by the thousands. I made one throw of the cast net and filled both wells with nice silver and black mullet. We slow trolled live mullet next to the schools for a couple hours and went 1-4 on tarpon. After the tarpon fishing we chugged offshore in pursuit of a sailfish. The kites were deployed in 300ft.of water with live threadfin herring and goggle eyes underneath them. About 20 minutes later Mike Jr. hooked and landed a big sailfish on 20lb test. which took about an hour to land. After Mike’s sail, a couple nice dolphin jumped on the lines but later pulled off. We ended up catching three barracudas to end the day.

The next morning the mullet were still getting chased in the inlet. We tarpon fished for about an hour before the torrential downpours and gale force winds took place. We lost a couple tarpon and decided to go to Casablanca for lunch.

The third day we gave the ocean a break and did some inshore stuff. I netted a well full of pilchards early in the morning so we had good bait to fish the bay. The action was excellent. The ladyfish and jack crevelle were swarming the boat. There were lots of tarpon rolling but unfortunately we could not trigger a bite.

On the last day, the seas calmed, the rain stopped, and the fish were biting. We headed offshore to target mahi mahi. About 8 miles offshore there was a giant weed line that formed with lots of bait fish on it. We fished the line for about three hours and caught our limit of nice gaffer dolphin and a wahoo by lunch time to end the trip!

A few days later we fished for wahoos with my brother in law and his friends. The weather was absolutely perfect. Not a cloud in the sky, light south east winds, and beautiful cobalt blue water. We trolled the edge south for a few hours. We went 7-10 on wahoo with a big shark to boot. The following day we left early and headed up north to fish a different area. The fishing was slow in the morning but picked up in the afternoon. From 1p.m.-3p.m. we filled the box with nice fish and headed for the hills. Timing is everything when it comes to wahoo fishing. You can go hours and hours without a strike and within the blink of an eye all hell breaks loose.

The swordfish bite continues to be strong if you can get a day where the weather permits. There has been good night time fishing with a few boats catching swords up to 500 lbs. The daytime swordfishing has been a bit slower with a handful of smaller fish being caught.

The sailfish are starting to show up on the reef, along with some nice dolphin. My best day this month was 6-8 on sailfish with 18 dolphin. One boat caught 20 sails in Palm Beach earlier in the week.

Season is around the corner and the days are filling up fast. If you would like to reserve a trip now is the time.
