Happy Independence DayReport Date: July 1, 2015The month of June started out slow for me this year. My intentions were to run offshore and fish for mahi. Boats from Key Biscayne to Islamorada had been catching them all week with some big fish mixed in. After three long hard days of searching offshore we only found a handful of small mahi, almaco jacks, and juvenile tuna. In lieu of our search we stumbled across a Cuban Raft, 40 ft tree, large pieces of bamboo, a broken up chair, several buckets, and rope. Under normal circumstances you would have been paid coming across these massive floating objects. Plenty of baitfish, triggerfish, black jacks, and triple tail but no mahis.
The next couple weeks, I traveled the Bahamas on a friend of mines private boat. The journey started in the Abacos and ended up in San Salvador. In San Sal we captured blue marlin up to 200 lbs, yellowfin tuna, big dolphin, and some giant sharks. We were very fortunate with the weather as well as the performance of the boat while travelling close to 600 miles.
Fishing has been good in Miami from what I have heard the past couple days. Charter boats up the line have been catching plenty of bonita, sailfish, kingfish, and some nice wahoos on the edge. Still plenty of dorados offshore with a few swords coming to the dock.
I start up fishing again towards the end of the week and am looking forward to it! July is a great time of year for big wahoo, dolphin, swordfish, shark, bonita, jacks, and snook.
