Grouper Season Open

Report Date: May 1, 2017

Fishing in Miami has been very active over the past few weeks. With stiff easterly breezes for over a month now the blue water has pushed in, along with many other predators.

Kite fishing has been the preferred method recently. We fly a kite and suspend live baits from them targeting pelagics swimming through. Some of the species that we have captured are big dolphin up to 25 lbs, sailfish, lots of bonitas, and some big blackfin tunas this week. The sailfish bite has dwindled down a bit.

Most of our luck has been late in the afternoon for the billfish, king mackeral, hammerhead sharks and blackfin tunas.

Grouper season opened yesterday and I have heard of some great reports. It should continue to get better as we get closer to the full moon. While we are grouper fishing it is not unlikely to catch big amberjacks

, african pompano, and cobia.

Nightime has been producing large tarpon on the beaches and inlets. Crabs and shrimp have been the bait of choice. Other by catch while targeting the tarpon have been bluefish, jack crevelles, mangrove snapper, lane snapper, mutton snapper, yellow jack and the occasional snook.

The winds are supposed to calm down this week. This should create some favorable conditions on our reefs that will hopefully produce some good fishing close to shore. May is the month for many species to catch in South Florida. Give me a call and lets get tight!
