Bite's On!

Once again, we are coming into the hottest month of the year for fishing South Florida. The currents has been strong north for the past week and the water blue do to the consistent east winds. These are ideal conditions. The great thing about spring time fishing is the variety of species you can catch. The smoker kings and blackfin tuna have showed up. Sailfishing is about as good as it gets and the big swordfish are biting in the day and night. It’s been a rather slow year, but now fishing is picking up.

On April 7, I had a morning trip, with a good friend of mines brother Greg Covin. Greg had two of his long time friends with him and they wanted to catch a sailfish. The bait had been tough that morning so I bought a few dozen from Ashley Live Bait. We started a drift in two hundred feet of water off Miami. With in 5 minutes we had our first sailfish on and jumping. After we let that fish go we jumped another one off in 100 ft of water. We fished for a couple more hours and caught two more sailfish along with some big barracuda to boot.
On the second half day I had Chris Kelly with his girlfriend Emily. Our game plan was to fish the afternoon and try for tarpon in the evening. We started the day with good weather and good luck at the bait hole. The baits were coming in one after another and Emily was catching some nice bluefish.

  After we caught our bait we tried a deep ship wreck. We hooked a big one first drop but he broke us off in the wreck. On the second drop Chris got to break in his new rod in with a 45lb amberjack. We later saw some big dolphin jumping under a frigate bird but unfortunately were not able to catch them. After the dolphin the day got worse and worse with strong winds and cold rain. We tried the tarpon but had no luck.

On April 9, Blake and his wife Donna went fishing on an afternoon trip. We tried a wreck in 200 ft. Every good fish we hooked got eaten by sharks. For the last hour we put the kites up and Blake caught his first Atlantic Sailfish.

On April 10, Blake and Donna were back for more. We heard of some good kingfish action so we decided to anchor and live chum. After two hours with out a bite we were starting to wonder if these reports were true. A few moment later we hooked a triple header king. For the next hour it was lock and load. We captured ten nice ones up to 35lbs.

On April 11, Sam and his friend Jerry caught 50 dolphin up to 12 lbs on a weed line 10 miles out of Miami.

  On April 14, we fished the Fisher Island tournament and caught 13-25 sailfish, 10 dolphin up to 15lbs. and one nice sized blackfin tuna.

  On April 15, We had Brian, Jeanine, Will, and Keenan to fish a 1/2 day off Miami. The fish were biting . They ended up catching 3-4 sailfish, a 25lb dolphin, two sharks, and two barracudas.

  On April 16-22 We fished the World Sailfish Tournament in Key West. The day before it started we caught 24-27 sailfish and saw well over 100 fish tailing south on a current edge. The next two days we caught 23 more. The captain gave us plenty of shots to win but unfortunately we didn’t capitalize.

On April23-30 I fished aboard the Fish Tales in the Guana Key Billfish Championship. Fortunately this tournament was good to us. We ended up winning with 4 blue marlin and a white marlin . Hats off to the captain and crew!
I have a couple tournament coming up and a some bahama trips. There are still a few dates available this month. If you want to get in on some of the action and fun now is the time to book.
